The right brow treatments for you

The right brow treatments for you

Throughout history, eyebrows have always played a huge part in our makeup regimens. We’ve seen thin brows, arched brows, flat brows, full brows, dark brows, bleached brows — every trend you can think of has come, gone, and often circled back around. While trends can be fleeting, eyebrow styles tend to stick around for longer than other elements of the face, which is why investing in your brows is worthwhile.

There are so many options out there when it comes to styling and treating your eyebrows — let’s take a closer look.

Shaping

Plucking

Plucking is ideal if you prefer a more natural-looking brow because the very fine surrounding hairs often can’t be picked up with teasers. This is also a more painless, cost-effective, and accessible option because you can tackle it at home. Just make sure you don’t over-pluck — it takes time for your brows to “grow back in” when this happens, and your brows could look a bit gappy while you wait.

Waxing & tinting

Waxing and threading often yield similar results, with limited plucking required after. These are best done by professionals, and are ideal if you prefer a very “clean” brow, or are looking for a specific shape that can’t be achieved by tweezing.

Colouring

Drawing

There’s the easy DIY of taking a gel, powder, pencil, or other colouring-tool to “fill in” your brows each morning. The product you use will depend on the look you’re trying to achieve. For example, a gel is ideal if you have very dark brows, or thin brows that need a bit of extra help, while pencil is better for a lighter finish.

Tinting

If you’re tired of drawing your brows on each day, tinting is the “next step” in making your brows last a little longer. This involves enhancing the brow through dye. The process takes around five minutes, and the results last up to eight weeks depending on how you care for your tinted brows.

Cosmetic tattooing

Prefer your brows to a little more permanent? Cosmetic treatments are a great option. The term “tattooing” scares a lot of people off, but the days of harsh, fake tattooed brows are long gone. Feather Touch and Ombre Powder are two techniques that deliver semi-permanent, natural-looking results.

Feather-touch, done through microblading, is for you if you want an effortless natural result — often, people won’t even notice your eyebrows have been touched up because they look so real. Hair-like strokes of pigment are implanted into the skin to give the appearance of real brow hairs. Brows look naturally-shaped and fuller without the boxy “filled in” look. Results last about 12 months.

The ombre powder method yields a bolder result and is good for people who desire a heavier, shapelier brow. The procedure is more aligned with the traditional method of tattooing, where thousands of pigment dots are inserted into the skin, gradually filling the colour and creating a defined shape. This finish is slightly less natural but will still be suited to the face and subtle if desired. Results last about two years.

Styling

Gel

Gels are a great option for neatening your brows and come in a range of price-points. They’re ideal for holding rogue-hairs in place, but not so good for changing the direction of the hairs (we’ll get to that in a second). Sometimes, gel can make the brows feel “wet” or “sticky”, so it’s important to find one that you like.

Soap

Soap brows took off in 2019, and are still exceedingly popular. With the right soap (many people have huge success even with the most generic, cheap soap bar) and a simple spoolie, brows are “cemented” in place. Often, soap is more effective than gel in that they can be used to change the direction of the hairs. For example, many people push the hairs “up and out” with a spoolie to achieve a natural feathered brow look.

Laminated brows

Even though you can achieve a laminated brows-look with soap, it’s time-consuming to repeat the process every day. Actually getting your eyebrows laminated will semi-permanently hold them in place. This involves a completely painless chemically-straightening process to hold brows in place. Brow styling is taken care of for six weeks.
