What is IPL Hair Removal?

Commonly referred to as IPL, the light-based treatment is safe and non-invasive, emitting a broad-spectrum output of light that permanently reduces hair growth.
Optimum results are usually achieved after 8-12 hair removal sessions, and with correct maintenance, excellent long-term results and permanent removal can be achieved!
How does it work?
Highly controlled pulses of light are produced with an IPL handpiece from a smooth, transparent light guide and are selectively absorbed by the hair follicles laying below the skin’s surface. The absorbed light heats the hair, damaging the follicle to a point where it’s unable to re-germinate or re-grow.
Which hair and skin types can receive IPL Hair Removal?
IPL can be very effective on all hair types, as long as the hair bulb has a dark enough pigment. Black and brown hair is most receptive, however, red, and even blonde hair can be successfully reduced. IPL is a safe treatment for all skin types, with a Fitzpatrick grading from 1-5; however, those with fairer skin and dark hair normally experience the best results.
What is a treatment like?
All of the IPL Permanent Hair Reduction treatments performed at Skintique are carried out by one of our registered nurses, or a highly skilled technician with diploma qualifications, extensive IPL training and full laser safety qualifications.
Prior to all IPL sessions, the hair in the treatment area will need to be shaved. A conductive gel is applied to the area, and you’ll be given protective goggles to shield your eyes from the bright light. The pulses of light are applied to your skin, damaging the hair follicles and their ability to re-grow hair; you may feel a very slight stinging sensation with each light pulse.
Within 3-14 days after each treatment, you’ll see that the hair within the treated area will begin to shed and fall out.
What should I expect?
The appearance of the area immediately following the treatment will vary from patient to patient, whilst also depending on the extent of the procedure and your skin type. You may experience some mild to moderate redness in the treated area, as well as follicle swelling; although they might be irritating, these observable after-effects are actually considered positive clinical results that indicate the follicle has responded well to the treatment.
To yield excellent long-term results, we generally administer the treatment in a series of 6-12 sessions. There’s usually no downtime post IPL, and most people are able to return to their normal activities immediately.
